Due to the increase of population and consequently a growing demand for intercity travels, the need for a Mass Rapid Transit [MRT] system has been felt at a national level for metropolitan cities [cities with inhabitants more than one million]. This plan has been approved by the Irainian Parliament for mentioned cities [there are five such cities in Iran] and Tabriz is one of them. The first part from El Goli Terminal to Shahriyar hotel with a length of 3.5 km is a shallow tunnel and constructed by cut and cover method and is going to be finished [railing has just finished]. The second part, starts from Rahnomaee to Tabriz University sq. and is a prestressed concrete elevated bridge. It's civil work has just finished. The third part from Tabriz University R.S to Khayyam Avenue is a deep tunnel with a length of 8 km due to existence of city lifelines. Construction will be done by an Earth Pressure Balance Shield [E.P.B.S] machine, using T.B.M technology. Tunnels will be a twin type with 6.88 meter diameters. The forth part from Khayyam Avenue to Laleh Terminal is a shallow tunnel [under construction].
